Dentist North York – Dental Tips Between Visits

Dentist North York Dental Tips

Regular professional cleanings are an important part of dental health. But what you do between visits is also extremely important. The dentists at Lawrence Park Dental, located in North York, suggest you consider these tips:

Be Gentle with your Teeth

Combined with gentle brushing, an extra soft-bristled brush helps minimize wear and tear on your gums.

Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or when the bristles become worn, bent or frayed.

Place your brush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth and use a gentle, circular motion to clean the gingival sulcus groove along your gumline.

Use a back-and-forth or up-and-down motion to clean the fronts, backs and chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Light brushing on the rough surface of your tongue, especially at the back, helps remove additional bacteria.

Improve you Toothbrush Grip

The correct way to hold your toothbrush is between your fingers, like a pencil.

If you have arthritis or another condition that makes it difficult to grasp a toothbrush, try sliding a foam tube or rubber grip over the handle of your toothbrush.

Electric Toothbrush

An electric toothbrush may help you reach all of your teeth better. Electric toothbrushes have rotating or vibrating bristles to aid in plaque removal.

Some studies have shown that properly used electric toothbrushes remove plaque and improve gum tissue health better than do manual brushes.

Although an electric toothbrush may be more efficient, you can achieve good oral hygiene with a manual toothbrush, often at a fraction of the cost.

Fluoride

Toothpaste with fluoride gives your enamel an extra dose of cavity fighting protection while you’re cleaning the plaque from your teeth.

The toothpaste you use can have a negative or positive effect on the sensitivity of your teeth and gums.

Tartar control or whitening toothpastes may cause gum or tooth sensitivity. Toothpastes for sensitive teeth may decrease sensitivity.

Flossing

Flossing after each meal or at the very least once per day will ensure you get in between your teeth and cover the areas that your tooth brush can’t. If you don’t floss, you are at a much higher risk for cavities and gum disease. To make your flossing experience easier, use the flossers that are easier to handle.
